Joshua’s Friends recognizes therapeutic horseback riding as an integral experience for children with disabilities, and one of the progressive therapies that will be offered from the Joshua House.
Special needs horseback riding builds confidence, promotes self-control, and fosters each child’s individual development needs.
Because of the individualized nature of therapeutic horseback riding it can be adapted to meet a plethora of unique therapy goals for our children:
- Balance, self confidence and enhanced muscle stimulation
- Deep muscle stimulation often not available in traditional forms of therapy
- Overall increase in range of motion and decrease in muscle tension
- Heighten awareness of the ability to control emotions and develop increased self-discipline
- Integration of other therapy discipline as well as reduced anxiety and increase levels of speech.
- Pure enjoyment and fun around an activity that many able body people are not willing to take on
- Opportunities to get out and feel included as children are able to meet others and build relationships
It is our belief that therapeutic horseback riding is one of the most intentionally inclusive activities which provides the highest level of therapeutic return for children with special needs. Due to the unique nature of therapy riding it is able to provide an approach that meets a host of special needs concerns across a broad spectrum.
Joshua has been on the back of horses sense he was 2 years old and the benefits are tremendous. We want to place all of Joshua’s Friends on horseback at the Joshua House. When you join us as a Dream Maker friend you make it happen!
Until horse riding is happening at the House we use grants and “fundraisers” to pay for therapeutic horse riding trips.
